EESM & MAGNETISM DEFINITION 

Electrically Excited Synchronous Motors (EESM) or Wound Field Synchronous Motors (WFSM) are a type of motor used in electric vehicles (EVs) that replace rare-earth permanent magnets with copper-wound coils in the rotor to generate a magnetic field. They offer high efficiency, particularly at high speeds (highway driving), and enable easier field weakening, reducing cost and environmental impact.

Key Characteristics and Advantages:

• Magnet-Free Design: By using electrical excitation instead of rare-earth magnets, these motors reduce dependence on expensive and environmentally damaging materials.

• High-Speed Efficiency: EESMs are more efficient than Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) at higher speeds, making them ideal for highway driving.

• Controllability: The field strength can be adjusted by varying the current in the rotor coils, allowing for precise control and efficient operation across a wide range of speeds.

Technical Details:

• Rotor Design: The rotor uses copper windings rather than magnets to generate the magnetic field.

• Excitation: External power sources are used to energize the rotor coils, sometimes using wireless power transfer instead of brushes.

• Cooling: Because of potential heat in the rotor, oil or enhanced air cooling systems are often necessary for optimal performance.
